 Metal Braces

Metal braces may not be the most visually appealing option for straightening teeth, but they are the most effective. While they lack aesthetic appeal, they excel in correcting most bite issues.

Choosing traditional metal braces over more discreet options like clear aligners can enhance treatment time and results. For more complicated or severe misalignment cases, traditional braces may be the only effective orthodontic option. Fortunately, recent advancements in orthodontics have led to better-looking, more affordable, and more effective metal braces.

Clear orthodontic aligners allow many patients to straighten their teeth or correct their bite without needing braces. However, some alignment issues require a more efficient approach that traditional braces can provide. Certain dental conditions, like teeth needing vertical movement (such as canines that erupted too high), are difficult to correct with clear aligners alone. Braces can move these teeth more quickly. Clear braces provide the strength and versatility of traditional braces without the noticeable appearance of metal braces.

What Are Traditional Braces?

Metal braces involve attaching a small metal bracket to the front of each tooth using special bonding cement. For some teeth, like the back molars, a metal band that wraps around the entire tooth may be used instead of a bracket. Wires are then placed onto the brackets, tightened, and secured with colored rubber bands called ligatures. You may also need separate removable rubber bands to help move your jaw into place. During each appointment, the orthodontist will check your progress, adjust the wires, and replace the ligatures.

Procedure Overview

  • If you’re unsure whether braces are worth the cost, consider this: Orthodontic treatment offers more than just a better-looking smile. Overcrowded and misaligned teeth can lead to more severe dental issues in the future. For instance, misaligned upper and lower teeth can grind against each other, causing damage or even tooth loss. Additionally, crooked and crowded teeth can be difficult to clean, leading to areas that are hard to reach with a toothbrush or dental floss. Consequently, braces are vital for maintaining oral hygiene and may be necessary to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

  • However, wearing metal braces can harm your dental hygiene if you don’t maintain a strict routine. Food and plaque can easily become trapped in the brackets, so brushing after every meal and flossing at least once a day is essential. Even with a metal wire in the way, flossing is still necessary. Your orthodontist can provide tips, and there are tools to help you “thread” the floss around the wire. Regular dental cleaning appointments are also crucial.

  • To prevent food from getting stuck in your braces, follow some dietary restrictions. Avoid chewy, sticky, crunchy, or hard foods. Caramel, chewing gum, and popcorn are particularly problematic as they can get stuck in brackets, loosen wires, or damage your braces. Sugary foods and drinks that cause cavities should also be minimized.

  • Neglecting oral hygiene while wearing braces can lead to stained teeth, tooth decay, and gum disease. Despite being prone to trapping plaque and food particles, braces can help you develop better brushing and flossing habits. Remember, the challenge of cleaning teeth with metal braces is a small price to pay for a healthier and more attractive smile.
