IV Sedation Decay

Our team is dedicated to providing a compassionate, caring, and comfortable environment for your dental care. We believe anxiety should not prevent you from receiving the treatment you need and deserve, so we go the extra mile to ensure your visit is stress-free.

With the latest procedures and technology, our specialists can alleviate the fears of even the most apprehensive patients. Our practice offers intravenous (IV) sedation for those who experience significant anxiety. IV sedation is the most powerful form of conscious sedation available to dentists and works almost instantly, unlike oral (pill) sedation. Additionally, recovery time after your appointment is often shorter with IV sedation compared to oral sedatives.

IV sedation, often referred to as “conscious sedation,” is designed to relax you during dental procedures without putting you to sleep. You will remain awake and able to respond to the dentist’s questions. Patients typically report feeling calm and drowsy, often with little to no memory of the appointment. Many patients find they don’t remember the procedure at all, making it an excellent option for those with dental anxiety.

What Is IV Sedation?

The drugs commonly used for IV sedation are called benzodiazepines, known for their relaxing and sleep-inducing effects. Due to the impairing nature of these medications, you will need a friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment. Afterward, you may feel sluggish and tired, and it’s important to avoid strenuous physical activity, driving, or operating heavy machinery for the rest of the day. Children recovering from IV sedation should be monitored closely and should not participate in after-school sports or similar activities.

Procedure Overview

If you opt for IV sedation during your dental appointment, the dentist will insert a needle into a vein in your arm or hand. A tube connected to the needle allows the medication to quickly enter your bloodstream, enabling the dentist to adjust the dosage as needed. This precise control reduces the likelihood of unwanted side effects compared to oral sedatives.

Throughout the procedure, our staff will monitor your oxygen levels and pulse to ensure your safety. IV sedation requires special licensing, training, and advanced equipment, so you can be confident that you are in good hands. If any issues arise, we can quickly administer another medication to reverse the sedation.

Uninsured Patients Can Benefit from Our In-House Dental Plan

Our in-house dental plan offers benefits for uninsured patients, providing access to necessary dental care, including procedures that may require IV sedation.

Before receiving IV sedation, it’s important to follow these precautionary steps:

  1. Medications: Inform us about any prescription or over-the-counter medications you are taking, as benzodiazepines can have dangerous interactions with other sedatives. This also includes alcohol, so you must avoid drinking on the day of your appointment.
  2. Fasting: To prevent nausea, do not eat for at least six hours before your procedure.
  3. Eligibility: Women who are pregnant or nursing are not eligible for IV sedation.
  4. Health Conditions: If you have a history of heart, respiratory, or liver problems, discuss the risks of IV sedation with your dentist or primary care doctor.
