Invisalign®
Invisalign® consists of a series of transparent aligners that fit over your teeth. Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign® aligners are removable and are replaced every two weeks throughout the course of your treatment.
The brackets and wires of traditional metal braces can trap food particles and make cleaning your teeth more challenging. If you don’t clean your teeth thoroughly while wearing metal braces, you may end up with stains once they are removed.
With Invisalign, there are no fixed wires or brackets, eliminating concerns about food getting stuck in your braces. You can smile confidently without hiding a mouthful of metal. Placing and removing Invisalign® aligners is easy and convenient, and they can be taken out before meals or social events. Even when worn, they are discreet and blend seamlessly with your smile.
What Is Invisalign®?
Invisalign® uses a series of clear aligners to gradually straighten your teeth. Each aligner shifts your teeth slightly, so you need to switch to a new set every two weeks. Typically, you will wear around 20 to 30 sets of aligners throughout the treatment, though some patients may need more or fewer sets depending on their specific case.
Invisalign® is effective for treating minor to moderate orthodontic issues. However, for severe problems, Invisalign® may not be suitable. Traditional metal braces are a reliable alternative that can correct most bite issues. To determine which treatment is best for you, please schedule a consultation today!
Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces
Removable aligners are convenient, but taking them out too often can complicate your treatment. Spending too much time without wearing them can cause you to lose progress, increasing the duration and cost of your Invisalign® treatment. You might even have to revert to an older set of aligners. Dentists recommend wearing your aligners for at least 22 hours a day, removing them only for meals and special occasions, and keeping track of the time they’re out of your mouth. If you tend to forget, traditional braces might be a better option for you.
Procedure Overview
As your treatment progresses, each new set of aligners will have minor adjustments. Initially, a new set might not fit perfectly because your teeth need to shift to match the aligner’s shape. Invisalign® is a gradual process, with each aligner moving a few specific teeth at a time. Your dentist or orthodontist will monitor your progress every few weeks and provide new sets of aligners based on your current progress.
The pressure from the aligner is usually strong enough to move most teeth, but some may need extra assistance. Your dentist or orthodontist can add attachments to guide your teeth into place. An attachment is a small dot of liquid bonding resin applied to a specific tooth and hardened with a curing light. This dot helps the aligner apply extra force to teeth that might not shift on their own. Adding and removing this bonding resin is a simple process that doesn’t require anesthesia.
