 Clear Braces

Clear braces, distinct from clear aligners, are traditional orthodontic braces made with advanced dental materials that make them nearly invisible.

When considering orthodontic treatment, a person’s appearance during the process can be just as important as their appearance after the treatment is finished.

Clear orthodontic aligners allow many patients to straighten their teeth or correct their bite without needing braces. However, some patients have alignment issues that require a more effective approach to tooth movement, which traditional braces can offer. Certain dental conditions, like teeth needing vertical movement (e.g., canines that erupted too high), are difficult to fix with clear aligners alone. Braces can move these teeth more efficiently. Clear braces provide the strength and versatility of traditional braces without the appearance of metal braces.

What Are Clear Braces?

Clear braces, also known as ceramic braces, use ceramic brackets instead of metal to hold the arch wire in place. This special dental ceramic can be either tooth-colored or clear, allowing the braces to blend seamlessly with a patient’s smile. From a short distance or in photos, these braces are barely noticeable. Some versions also feature a tooth-colored wire to make them even more discreet.

The Advantage of Clear Braces

One advantage braces have over clear aligners is that they ensure consistent treatment compliance. The effectiveness and speed of clear aligner treatment depend partly on wearing them for the recommended 22 hours per day. Since braces are permanently attached to the teeth until removed by a dentist, they do not rely on patient compliance. Clear ceramic braces offer a discreet option that minimally impacts the appearance of your smile while keeping your treatment on track.

Procedure Overview

While clear braces are sometimes slightly more expensive than metal braces, they can be more affordable than clear aligners. The treatment duration for clear braces is the same as for metal braces, averaging around 24 months. Some patients may opt for a combination of clear braces and clear aligners to achieve the desired results. As with all orthodontic treatments, the total treatment time and cost depend on the severity of the misalignment. Every case is unique, as any dentist or orthodontist will confirm.

If you choose clear ceramic braces instead of traditional metal braces or clear aligners, you must maintain a diligent oral hygiene routine to keep them looking their best. Clear or tooth-colored brackets are more susceptible to staining and discoloration from foods and beverages, which can attract more unwanted attention than metal braces. Brushing and flossing after meals will ensure you get the maximum cosmetic benefit from your clear braces. If you cannot maintain a rigorous oral hygiene routine, traditional braces might be a better option. However, if clear braces motivate you to improve your dental care regimen, we strongly encourage you to try them!
