Gum Surgery
We offer comprehensive gum surgery services to restore your oral health.
Gum surgery can be performed for various reasons, including cosmetic and restorative purposes. Using minimally invasive techniques, our dentists can reshape your gum line to enhance your smile’s appearance. For individuals with “gummy” smiles, which are often a result of genetics, our procedures can help correct the gum line if the gums did not recede properly when adult teeth emerged.
What is What is Gum Surgery?
Gum surgery is a minimally invasive procedure aimed at treating severe gum disease, restoring gum lines, or accessing teeth covered by the gums. It is typically considered only after other treatment options are exhausted. Despite the severity of gum surgery, it is essential to prevent the spread of disease from the mouth to other parts of the body, which can lead to serious, life-threatening complications.
Cosmetic gum surgery can enhance your smile by reducing the appearance of excessive gums, thereby boosting self-esteem. Consult your dentist to determine if gum surgery is the right option for you.
Gum Lift
A gum lift is a procedure focused solely on removing excess gum tissue, unlike crown lengthening, which involves removing both bone and gum tissue. Thanks to modern advancements, gum lifts have become more appealing to patients. Using the latest laser technology, gum lifts are now quicker, nearly painless, and require significantly less recovery time. Unlike traditional methods that involved incisions and sutures, today’s procedures use a soft tissue laser to gently remove gum tissue. This laser cauterizes blood vessels as it works, resulting in minimal bleeding, reduced swelling, and faster healing.
Gum lifts are often performed in combination with other cosmetic procedures as part of a smile makeover, such as after orthodontic treatment (braces). Other methods to enhance tooth appearance include veneers or bonding, which can be considered instead of or alongside a gum lift. If you have been told you have a gummy smile or small teeth, a gum lift might be an ideal solution to improve your smile’s appearance.
Gum lifts are not used to treat diseases. Several other types of gum surgery are associated with periodontitis (advanced gum disease). While these procedures may have cosmetic benefits, their primary purpose is to address health concerns.
Gum Disease Treatment
If you have severe gum disease, your dentist will discuss the most suitable procedures and minimally invasive options for your specific case.
It’s important to address gum disease promptly. Delaying treatment can lead to more extensive surgery and, in some cases, allow the disease to spread beyond the mouth, necessitating serious procedures elsewhere in the body.
Minor gum surgery might be needed to access teeth that are completely covered by the gums or to reach areas of the tooth that are covered by gum tissue. Small incisions are made to access these areas, and anesthesia and sedation dentistry are available to minimize or eliminate pain. A common example is wisdom tooth extraction, which can be performed before the tooth emerges through the gum line.
